Francis 'Pope's His Ride'

Picture the scene — US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, are standing at the South Portico of the White House waiting for their guest to arrive. A black, Secret Service-esc S.U.V. pulls up, the kind of car favoured by heads of state and movie stars, that weigh more than an armoured tank and have an MPG of about 8 — on a very good day.

Following not far behind the petrol guzzling S.U.V, is a black Fiat 500L, bearing the licence plate SCV 1 — denoting it as the first vehicle of the Vatican City — 'Status Civitatis Vaticanae'.

Aside from the glaringly obvious Italian link, Pope Francis' symbolic gesture of riding around the US in the Fiat 500L conveys his views on global vehicle emissions in a much more poignant way than words ever could.

That’s how this Pope often operates. Back in July, 2013, Pope Francis instructed Catholic priests to drive modest and economical vehicles, and that's where the Fiat 500L really marks his point.

With its 1.4-litre engine, the elongated version of the iconic Fiat 500 is just as stylish, but most importantly — it's economical — he can get fourty-five miles to the gallon out of this chic Italian workhorse.

The Fiat 500L has more doors and more space. Lots more space! The roomiest car in its category.

At just 4.1 metres long it has a massive 400-litre boot space, can be configured in eight different ways and with 1,500 possible seating combinations — all of which means that Pope Francis can fold down the backs seats however he likes — to create a table for his coffee or to play a game of cards during his six-hour holiday drive from the Vatican to Puglia.

So, why not follow Francis' lead 'Pope Your Ride'.

Drive this modest car for a modest price of just £12,995 — available now at Griffin Mill Fiat.
