Student of the Year 2005

This year's winner of the award was Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun pupil Peter Hill, who won the keys to a brand new fully-insured Peugeot 206 for the whole year. The 18-year-old from Merthyr recently scored four A's in his A-levels and was commended for his voluntary work, music talent and commitment to promoting the Welsh language.

The shocked student, who will shortly be starting a Welsh degree at Aberystwyth University, said: "Its come as a bit of a shock as there's so many fantastic people here. I'd like to thank Rhydywaun for making this possible, and I'll be able to come here more often now I have a car." A runner-up prize was awarded to Brett Stoyle of Ferndale Comprehensive, who received the prize of a mountain bike.

Gareth Rees from Rhondda Cynon Taf's education and lifelong learning department said it was a difficult task to choose a winner. "There were even more outstanding students than last year," he added, "It shows the quality of young people we have in RCT."
